3. Speaking 主练习
Part 2 题目
Describe a useful skill you learned outside school.
You should say:
- what the skill is;
- when and how you learned it;
- how you have used it;
- and explain why it is useful to you.
One useful skill I learned outside school is cooking simple meals. I started learning it when I was at university because I was living away from my family and eating out was becoming expensive. At first, I could only prepare instant noodles and fried eggs, so I followed short online videos and practised one dish at a time.
The first meal I learned properly was tomato and egg noodles. It sounds simple, but it taught me how to control the heat and prepare ingredients in the right order. Later, I became more confident and tried rice dishes and basic soups. I usually cook at weekends, and I sometimes prepare two meals in advance when I know I will be busy during the week.
This skill is useful for both practical and personal reasons. It saves money, helps me eat more healthily, and gives me a sense of achievement. More importantly, cooking has taught me to be patient. If a dish goes wrong, I have to work out what caused the problem instead of giving up immediately. That is why I see it as more than a household skill; it has also made me more independent.
One particularly useful skill I developed outside formal education is assignment coordination. I began learning it several years ago when I became involved in a cross-functional assignment at work. Although I was not the assignment manager, I had to coordinate colleagues, test resources, schedules and status updates across different the organisation's internal system.
I learned mainly through hands-on experience. I started by keeping a simple action tracker, clarifying owners and deadlines, and sending concise follow-up messages after meetings. Over time, I also learned to distinguish between a genuine complex blocker and a communication gap. For example, when a test was delayed, I would first confirm the exact failure evidence, then identify the person who could remove the dependency, rather than simply reporting that the task was “pending”.
I have used this skill in release practical work and in investigating failed test cases. It helps me turn a complicated situation into a sequence of manageable actions. It has also improved my communication because I have learned to present facts, risks and next steps separately. In my view, the most valuable part is not making every assignment run perfectly; it is helping a team respond calmly and make decisions based on reliable information.
Part 3 追问
- Should schools teach more practical skills?
- Are practical skills more important than academic knowledge?
- Why do some adults find it difficult to learn new skills?

5. Writing Task 2
题目
Some people believe that schools should teach practical skills, such as managing money and cooking, rather than traditional academic subjects. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
- 5 min introduction + conclusion:
- 5 min checking:
Useful language
- equip young people with essential life skills:使年轻人具备必需的生活技能
- provide the foundation for further learning:为后续学习提供基础
- in the long run:从长远来看
Complete model response(示例语言,约 275 词)
There is a growing view that schools should prioritise practical skills over traditional academic subjects. I partly agree that skills such as budgeting and cooking deserve a more prominent place in the curriculum, but I do not believe they should replace academic education.
Practical skills can prepare teenagers for responsibilities that they will face immediately after leaving school. A student who understands budgeting is less likely to make impulsive financial decisions, while basic cooking knowledge can improve health and reduce dependence on expensive takeaway food. These skills can also make education feel more relevant to daily life. For instance, a lesson on household budgeting could combine mathematics with a realistic discussion of rent, bills and saving. This would help students see how abstract knowledge is applied outside the classroom.
However, traditional academic subjects provide foundations that cannot easily be replaced. Literacy enables people to understand contracts, instructions and reliable information, and scientific knowledge helps them evaluate claims about health or technology. In addition, subjects such as history and literature develop analytical thinking and cultural awareness. These abilities may not produce an immediate practical result, but they influence how people make decisions and participate in society in the long run.
Therefore, the most sensible approach would be to introduce practical skills as compulsory modules while maintaining a strong academic core. Schools could offer short, assignment-based units on cooking, personal finance and digital safety, and link them to mathematics, science and language classes. In this way, practical education would complement rather than replace traditional subjects. A balanced curriculum would give students both the knowledge to understand the world and the skills to manage everyday life.
6. Listening maintenance
Original mini-activity
- The workshop was postponed because the speaker was ill.
- Students should submit a brief outline before the presentation.
- The main difficulty was a lack of reliable data.
7. Reading maintenance
- 重点练句子重音:particularly useful skill, hands-on experience, reliable information。
- 在 rather than, instead of, more importantly 前后做自然停顿,不要每个词等长发音。
9. Common errors
|---|---|---|
| discuss about practical skills | discuss practical skills | 查动词后是否多了介词 |
| students can learns | students can learn | 情态动词后用动词原形 |
| save more money and healthy | save money and eat more healthily | 并列结构和副词形式一致 |
| In the other hand | On the other hand |
| people is becoming | people are becoming | people 是复数 |
| One reason is because… | One reason is that…
10. Review
11. Next-day preparation — 2026-11-03,
Describe a time when you solved a problem。提前写 5 个关键词:problem, first reaction, action, result, lesson。 Although…, I would argue that…。
