三、Speaking 主题:Describe a skill you learned that is useful in your work or daily life

Part 2 题目

Describe a skill you learned that is useful in your work or daily life.

You should say:

Student version — Model Answer

One skill I learned that has been genuinely useful is time management. I began working on it seriously when I was preparing for an important exam at university. At that time, I had several subjects to revise, but I also had classes and group assignments, so simply studying harder was not enough.

I started by dividing my workload into smaller tasks and putting them into a weekly schedule. Instead of writing something vague like “study English”, I wrote specific goals, such as reviewing a unit, completing a reading exercise, or recording a short speaking answer. At the end of each week, I checked what I had actually completed and adjusted the following week’s plan.

I still use this skill when I study English now. For example, I set aside a fixed amount of time for speaking practice and leave some spare time for tasks that take longer than expected. What I find most useful is that the method reduces procrastination. I may not feel motivated every day, but I usually know what the next manageable step is. In that sense, time management has made me more organised and also less anxious about my workload.

适合结合 the organisation's internal system automation/test work 的真实背景,但不要堆砌技术名词。

Working-professional version — Model Answer

One skill I have developed through my work is the ability to turn a large amount of complex information into a clear, decision-oriented summary. I did not learn it from a single course. I gradually developed it while dealing with written notes, failure reports and follow-up questions from different the organisation's internal system.

In the beginning, I tended to include too many details because I was worried that an important clue might be missed. Later, I adopted a simple structure. I first state what happened, then list the confirmed evidence, and finally separate possible causes from facts that still need verification. I also include the workplaces, digital documents, iteration, log location and the next action. This makes the report useful even for someone who was not present during the test.

I use this skill almost every day, especially when I analyse an intermittent failure or prepare a status update. It is useful because complex problems are often not solved by one person. If the information is unclear, another team may investigate the wrong direction. A concise and evidence-based summary helps people make decisions faster, while still leaving room for the root cause to be confirmed later.

Part 3

Question 1: Why do some people find it difficult to learn new skills?

Answer framework:

Model answer

I think the main difficulty is that people often expect visible progress too quickly. A new skill usually feels uncomfortable at the beginning, so they may interpret early mistakes as evidence that they are not capable. Another problem is that some learners do not have a realistic routine. They may spend three hours studying once, but then stop for two weeks. For example, someone learning public speaking would probably improve more through ten minutes of regular recording than through one long session every month. Consistency and manageable targets are therefore more important than occasional bursts of effort.

Question 2: Should companies be responsible for helping employees develop skills?

Model answer

To a considerable extent, yes, because companies benefit when employees can adthe current programme to new tools and responsibilities. They can provide training, mentoring and time for people to practise, rather than expecting everyone to learn after work. However, the responsibility should be shared. Employees still need to identify their weaknesses and take ownership of their development. In my experience, the most effective arrangement is a combination of structured support from the company and a personal learning plan that is connected to real work.

Question 3: Is practical experience more important than formal education?

Model answer

It depends on the field and the stage of a person’s career. Formal education provides concepts, terminology and a systematic foundation, which is particularly important in areas requiring professional standards. Practical experience, on the other hand, teaches people how to handle uncertainty and communicate with others. I would not place one above the other. A strong candidate usually combines a sound theoretical foundation with opportunities to apply it, reflect on mistakes and improve the process.

Speaking

Although..., I would still argue that...。

Expression
develop a skill培养一项技能build up a practical ability
be genuinely useful确实有用,而非泛泛地说 usefulhave a direct practical value
break a task down into smaller steps把任务拆成小步骤divide a complex task into manageable stages
take ownership of my development对自己的成长负责play an active role in my professional growth
deal with uncertainty处理不确定性work effectively in situations where the outcome is unclear
a manageable target可完成、可控制的目标a realistic and measurable objective
a sound theoretical foundation扎实的理论基础a well-established conceptual base
turn information into a clear summary将信息整理成清晰总结translate complex evidence into an actionable overview
to a considerable extent在相当程度上largely, although not entirely
the responsibility should be shared责任应由双方共同承担accountability should not rest entirely with one side
what I find most useful is that...我觉得最有用的是……The most valuable aspect, in my view, is that...
Looking back, ...

  1. Time management is useful because it helps me finish work.
  2. Companies should train workers because technology changes.
  3. I learned this skill by practising every day.

  1. Time management has direct practical value because it allows me to prioritise competing tasks and meet deadlines without sacrificing quality.
  2. Companies should provide continuous training, since technological change can quickly make established working methods less effective.
  3. I developed the skill through deliberate, consistent practice rather than relying on occasional bursts of motivation.

五、Writing Task 2

题目

Some people think employers should focus on the personal development of their employees, while others believe that employees should be responsible for their own development. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion,意思是讨论双方观点,并明确给出自己的立场。

  1. Introduction:

Complete model response(约 280 词)

There is disagreement over whether employers or employees should take primary responsibility for personal development at work. Although companies have an important role to play, I believe professional growth is most effective when responsibility is shared.

On the one hand, employers are in a strong position to support development because they control training budgets, workplace resources and access to experienced colleagues. They also understand which skills are likely to be valuable to the organisation in the future. For example, a company introducing a new data system can provide structured training and time for employees to practise it. This is more likely to produce consistent results than expecting staff to learn an unfamiliar tool entirely in their spare time. Investment in development may also improve employee retention, since people are more willing to stay where they can see a clear path for progression.

On the other hand, employees should not rely completely on their employers. Individuals have different strengths, career ambitions and learning needs, and a standard training programme cannot address all of them. An employee who wants to move into management, for instance, may need to develop communication or negotiation skills that are not immediately required in their current role. By identifying these gaps and practising deliberately, employees can take ownership of their long-term career direction. They are ultimately responsible for applying what they learn and converting an opportunity into a real improvement.

In my view, neither side should carry the entire burden. Employers should provide relevant resources, feedback and reasonable learning time, while employees should set personal goals and engage actively with these opportunities. This shared approach is more sustainable because it connects organisational needs with individual motivation, benefiting both workplace performance and long-term career development.

Questions

  1. What was the speaker’s original problem?
  2. What change did the speaker make to the study routine?
  3. Which two benefits were mentioned?

Short audio script

At first, I tried to improve my English by studying for two hours at the weekend. The problem was that I forgot much of the vocabulary by the following week. I then changed to a shorter daily routine: I reviewed ten words in the morning and recorded a one-minute answer in the evening. After a month, I noticed that I could recall expressions more quickly and speak with fewer long pauses. The routine was not demanding, but its regularity made it easier to maintain.

Answers

  1. The speaker forgot much of the vocabulary between weekend study sessions.
  2. The speaker changed to a short daily routine: reviewing ten words in the morning and recording a one-minute answer in the evening.
  3. Faster recall of expressions and fewer long pauses.

Passage

Many organisations now provide online courses for staff, but access alone does not guarantee learning. Employees are more likely to complete a course when they are given protected time during working hours. Short follow-up tasks can also help them transfer a new concept into daily practice. However, a course designed without reference to an employee’s actual responsibilities may have little immediate value. For this reason, effective development programmes usually combine formal instruction with feedback from a manager or an experienced colleague.

Decide whether the statements are True, False or Not Given.

  1. Online courses are more effective than face-to-face training.
  2. Employees may be more likely to finish a course if work time is allocated to it.
  3. Follow-up tasks can support the use of new ideas at work.
  4. Managers are required to attend every employee development course.

Answers and evidence

  1. Not Given — 文中没有比较 online 和 face-to-face 的效果。
  2. True — more likely to complete ... when they are given protected time during working hours。
  3. True — help them transfer a new concept into daily practice。
  4. False — 文中说 feedback from a manager or colleague 有帮助,不是 managers 必须参加每门课程。
