Part 2 话题

Describe a skill you learned that is useful in your daily life or work.

You should say:

Model answer A — student version

A useful skill I learned is how to organise my study time. I started learning it when I was preparing for an important exam because I used to study for many hours without making much progress. At first, I wrote down everything I wanted to do, but the list was too long and I often felt discouraged. Later, I learned to divide a large goal into smaller tasks and set a realistic time limit for each one.

I usually make a simple plan at the beginning of the day. I choose two important tasks, such as reviewing vocabulary and writing a short paragraph, and I leave some time for unexpected things. This skill is useful because it helps me stay focused instead of constantly switching between activities. For example, when I have a busy week, I can still study for thirty minutes a day rather than giving up completely. More importantly, it has made me feel more in control of my time. I am still improving, but I now understand that consistency is usually more effective than studying intensely once in a while.

Model answer B — working-professional version

A skill that has become extremely useful in my work is troubleshooting a problem in a structured way. I developed it gradually through dealing with software and hardware issues. In the past, when something failed, I tended to try several possible solutions at random. That sometimes made the situation more confusing and also made it difficult to explain what had happened to other people.

I eventually learned to separate confirmed evidence from assumptions. I first reproduce the problem if possible, record the exact error and time, and then change one variable at a time. For instance, if an automated test stops unexpectedly, I check the written notes, the device connection and the document versions separately instead of immediately blaming the test script. I also keep a short record of what I have checked, so a colleague can continue the investigation without repeating the same steps.

This skill is valuable because it saves time and makes communication more precise. It does not guarantee that I will find the root cause immediately, but it helps me avoid guesswork and reach a reliable conclusion. I think it is useful outside work as well, because many everyday problems become easier when they are broken into smaller, testable questions.

Part 3

  1. Should schools teach more practical skills?
Yes, to a certain extent, because ...
  4. Why do some people give up when learning a new skill?
  6. Is it better to learn a skill alone or with other people?
  8. How can employers encourage staff to develop new skills?

I would say ... → The main reason is that ... → A good example would be ... → As a result, ...

break a large goal into smaller tasks把大目标拆成小任务divide a demanding objective into manageable steps
make steady progress稳定进步make consistent, measurable progress
stay focused保持专注maintain concentration on a priority
deal with a problem in a structured way有条理地处理问题approach an issue systematically
separate evidence from assumptions区分证据和假设distinguish verified facts from speculation
avoid guesswork避免凭猜测判断avoid drawing conclusions without sufficient evidence
to a certain extent在一定程度上to some extent; up to a point
rather than而不是instead of; as opposed to
this does not necessarily mean that...这并不一定意味着……this should not automatically be taken to mean that...
a balanced approach平衡的方法a balanced and context-sensitive approach

今日主动使用要求: 口语至少使用 to a certain extent、for instance、rather than;作文至少使用 this does not necessarily mean that 和 as a result,但不要为了复杂而重复。

五、Writing Task 2

题目

Some people believe that schools should focus more on practical skills, such as managing money and communicating at work, than on traditional academic subjects. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Model response(约 300 词)

It is often argued that schools should give greater priority to practical skills than to traditional academic subjects. I partly agree with this view because skills such as financial management and workplace communication can prepare young people for everyday responsibilities. However, I do not believe that academic subjects should be treated as less important.

There is a strong argument for teaching practical skills at school. Many students leave full-time education without knowing how to plan a budget, understand a contract or communicate professionally. These abilities are particularly important when young adults begin working and living independently. For example, a basic lesson on income, regular expenses and saving could help students avoid unnecessary debt. Similarly, practising presentations and professional emails could make the transition from school to employment less stressful. As a result, practical education can give students confidence and help them make sensible decisions.

That said, it would be short-sighted to reduce the time spent on academic subjects. Mathematics develops logical reasoning, while science teaches students to evaluate evidence and understand the world around them. These abilities remain useful even when a person does not work in an academic field. In addition, subjects such as history and literature can develop cultural awareness and the ability to consider different perspectives. Rather than replacing these subjects, schools should connect them with real-life applications. For instance, mathematics can include personal finance, and language classes can involve formal workplace communication. The two areas are not mutually exclusive.

In conclusion, schools should expand practical education because it equips students for adult life and employment. Nevertheless, a balanced curriculum that maintains strong academic foundations would serve students better than one that prioritises practical skills at the expense of traditional subjects.

The evening communication course was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but it has been moved to Thursday because the trainer is unavailable. It will run from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. for six weeks. The fee is 180 pounds, although members of the local library receive a 15 percent discount. Participants should bring a laptop, but printed materials will be provided.
  1. What day will the course take place?
  2. How long is each class?
  3. Who can receive a discount?
  4. What should participants bring?
  5. How many weeks does the course last?
  6. What was the original day?

答案: 1 Thursday;2 90 minutes / 1.5 hours;3 local library members;4 a laptop;5 six weeks;6 Tuesday。

Short workplace courses are becoming more common, but their value depends on how they are designed. A course that simply presents information may be quickly forgotten. By contrast, training that asks participants to solve realistic problems allows them to practise decisions in a safe environment. Feedback is also important: without it, learners may repeat an inefficient method without realising it. For this reason, effective training usually combines explanation, practice and a review of performance rather than relying on lectures alone.

题目

  1. What is the main idea of the paragraph?
  2. Why are realistic problems useful?
  3. What may happen without feedback?
  4. In the paragraph, By contrast signals: A. an example B. a comparison/difference C. a conclusion
  5. Complete: Effective training combines explanation, ______ and review.
