2. Speaking focus: a place that is important to you

Part 2 cue card

Describe a place that is important to you.

You should say:

Planning method: place–memory–meaning–change

“Meaningful” means emotionally or personally significant. Specific sensory details—light, sound, layout, weather, or atmosphere—make the answer more vivid, but they should support the story rather than become a list.

Model answer A — student version

The place that is especially important to me is my university library, which is in the centre of my hometown. I used to go there several times a week during my final year because it was quieter and more comfortable than studying at home.

I remember one evening when I was preparing for an important examination. I had been struggling with a difficult subject and was close to giving up. Instead of memorising another page of notes, I found a book that explained the topic through practical examples. I spent several hours there reorganising my notes and finally understood the main idea. The library was almost empty, and I could hear the rain against the windows, so the whole experience felt unusually calm.

What makes the place important is not simply the building itself, but the sense of progress associated with it. It reminds me that a problem can become manageable if I change my method and give myself enough time. I no longer visit it regularly because I have graduated, but I sometimes return when I need to concentrate or reflect. In that sense, it represents an important stage of my life and a more independent approach to learning.

Model answer B — working-professional version

The place that has become particularly meaningful to me is a small meeting room at my workplace. It is not impressive architecturally—it has a long table, a whiteboard, and a window overlooking the test area—but it is where my team has solved several difficult problems together.

One meeting stands out. We were investigating a failure that appeared only after a long sequence of practical work, and everyone initially had a different theory. Rather than arguing from memory, we wrote the confirmed observations on one side of the board and the unverified assumptions on the other. We then reconstructed the sequence step by step. By the end of the discussion, we had identified a missing condition in the reproduction procedure and agreed on a focused follow-up test.

The room is important to me because it represents a change in how I work. Earlier in my career, I sometimes tried to provide an answer too quickly. That experience taught me that careful questioning and evidence-based discussion are often more valuable than confident speculation. Whenever I enter the room now, I am reminded to make complex issues clearer for the whole team. Its importance therefore comes from the habits and professional growth it represents, rather than from the physical space itself.

Part 3 questions

  1. Why do some places become more meaningful as people get older?
  2. How can public spaces improve people’s quality of life?
  3. Should governments preserve old buildings even when they are expensive to maintain?
  4. Do people need to travel far to experience a different culture?

Answer frame: direct answer → reason → specific example → qualification or result. Aim for 3–5 developed sentences. Add one nuanced contrast: Although…, I would argue that… or This is particularly true when…

3. High-frequency expressions and upgrades

Expression中文解释Flexible upgrade / example

4. Writing focus — Task 2 advantages and disadvantages essay

Task

More people today work or study from home rather than going to a workplace or educational institution. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Key term

“Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?” asks you to compare both sides and give a clear judgement about which side is stronger overall. A qualified position is acceptable, but the conclusion must still answer the question directly.

Recommended structure

  1. Introduction: paraphrase the trend and state whether the advantages are greater overall.
  2. Body 1: explain the main advantages, such as flexibility and reduced commuting, with a realistic example.
  3. Body 2: explain the main disadvantages, such as isolation, blurred boundaries, or unequal access to equipment; show why they matter.
  4. Conclusion: give a direct overall judgement and mention the condition that supports it.

Useful language

Model response (about 285 words)

Working or studying from home has become increasingly common. Although this arrangement can create practical and social difficulties, I believe its advantages outweigh its disadvantages when people have suitable resources and clear routines.

The main benefit is greater flexibility. Without a daily commute, people can save time and use it for sleep, exercise, family responsibilities, or additional study. This can also reduce transport costs and the environmental impact of crowded roads. For example, an employee who previously spent two hours travelling each day may be able to start work with more energy and devote the saved time to professional development. Home-based work can therefore improve productivity as well as work-life balance, provided that people are able to organise their time effectively.

However, remote arrangements may weaken communication and make it harder to separate work from personal life. Informal conversations, which often help colleagues exchange ideas and build trust, occur less naturally online. In addition, a person who works in the same room where they relax may continue checking messages long after the working day has ended. These problems are particularly serious for new employees or students who need immediate guidance. The disadvantages are also unevenly distributed, since some people lack a quiet workspace, suitable equipment, or stable internet access.

In my view, these limitations are significant but manageable. Organisations and educational institutions can schedule regular face-to-face or video discussions, provide the necessary equipment, and establish clear expectations about working hours. Individuals must also create a designated study or work area wherever possible. With these safeguards, the flexibility and time savings of home-based arrangements are more substantial than the social and organisational costs.

In conclusion, working or studying from home can reduce interaction and blur personal boundaries, but its benefits are greater when access, communication, and routines are properly managed.

Self-check: five measurable points

5. Listening maintenance

Before listening to one IELTS Section 2 or 3 recording, predict whether each answer needs a time, place, person, item, or activity. Then complete this original mini-task.

Message: “The community centre’s photography course will start on Tuesday 10 November rather than Monday. Classes will be held in Room 204, and participants should bring a notebook, although cameras will be provided. The tutor, Mr Evans, will explain how to plan a photo assignment during the first session. The booking deadline is Friday at 5 p.m.”

  1. New starting day: ______
  2. Room number: ______
  3. What should participants bring? ______
  4. Who is the tutor? ______
  5. Booking deadline: ______

Answers: 1) Tuesday 10 November, 2) Room 204, 3) a notebook, 4) Mr Evans, 5) Friday at 5 p.m.

Strategy: listen for corrections and contrasts such as rather than, although, and but. The answer is often the detail that follows the correction, not the first detail mentioned.

6. Reading maintenance

Use one IELTS passage containing headings, matching information, or multiple-choice questions. Spend 90 seconds identifying each paragraph’s topic, then answer five questions in 12 minutes. For every answer, underline the evidence and record one paraphrase.

Strategy: for headings, summarise the paragraph in five to eight words before looking at the options. For multiple choice, predict the answer, locate the evidence, and reject options that are too broad, too narrow, or contradicted.

Original mini practice

Public libraries are increasingly used as community workspaces rather than only as places to borrow books. This change can make libraries more valuable to people who lack a quiet home office. Nevertheless, libraries need clear rules about noise, meeting rooms, and computer use so that different groups can share the space fairly.

Question: What does the passage identify as necessary when libraries serve more functions?

Answer: They need clear rules so that different users can share the facilities fairly.

Paraphrase pair: lack a quiet home office = do not have a suitable private place to work at home.
