- Study day:
- Target score: Band 7.5–8.0
- Estimated study time: 105–115 minutes
- Primary focus: Speaking development and Writing Task 2 coherence, precision, and examples
- Maintenance focus: Listening paraphrase recognition and Reading skimming
Describe an important skill you learned
| Skill | Time | Task | Measurable output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Writing | 42 min | Task 2
| Review | 5 min |
- Writing:不能只写“很重要/很有帮助”;每个观点至少回答 why, how, and with what result。
3. Speaking 主课:Describe an important skill you learned
题目
Describe an important skill you learned.
You should say:
- what the skill is;
- when and how you learned it;
- how you have used it;
- and explain why it is important to you.
Skill → Learning process → Application → Reflection
- Skill: 先直接回答,例如 “The skill I would like to talk about is structured problem-solving.”
- Learning process:
Student version(学生版示范,约 1 分 50 秒)
The important skill I learned is public speaking. I started developing it during my second year at university, when I had to give a group presentation in front of my classmates. At that time, I knew the subject quite well, but I often spoke too quickly and lost my train of thought when someone asked a question.
To improve, I stopped trying to memorise every sentence. Instead, I prepared three or four key points and practised explaining each point in my own words. I also recorded myself on my phone and noticed that I needed to pause more often and make better eye contact. After several weeks, I became more comfortable with unexpected questions because I had learned to explain the main idea first and then add details.
I have used this skill in later presentations and group discussions. It is important to me because it has made me more confident and more willing to express an opinion. I still feel nervous sometimes, but I no longer see nervousness as a reason to remain silent. I have learned that effective speaking is less about sounding perfect and more about making an idea easy for other people to follow.
Working-professional version(职场版示范,约 2 分钟)
The skill I consider particularly important is structured problem-solving. I developed it gradually through complex assignments at work, especially when a test failed but the available evidence did not immediately reveal the cause.
In the beginning, I tended to jump to the most obvious explanation and restart the test. That sometimes made the problem disappear temporarily, but it also destroyed useful evidence. I then adopted a more disciplined process. I record the build, workplaces, case, iteration, exact failure time, and relevant log path first. After that, I separate confirmed observations from hypotheses. For instance, I may be able to confirm that a device became unreachable, but I should not claim that it crashed unless there is supporting evidence such as a dump or a clear reboot record. Finally, I compare the result with previous runs and define the next verification step.
I learned this skill through repeated practice, feedback from colleagues, and reviewing failures after each run. It has been useful not only for debugging, but also for communicating with people who need a concise and reliable status update. It is important to me because it has changed the way I make decisions under pressure. Rather than reacting to a symptom, I try to build an explanation that can be checked. In my view, that makes the result more trustworthy and the next action more efficient.
这些特征可以支持较高的 Fluency and Coherence、Lexical Resource 和 Grammatical Range and Accuracy,但不能保证固定分数。
Part 3
- Should schools teach more practical skills?
- Why do some people find it difficult to learn new skills as adults?
- Is it better to learn a skill alone or with a teacher?
- What skills will be most valuable in the future workplace?
- 是否有至少 3 个具体细节,而不是连续使用 “very important/useful”;
- 是否出现自然停顿,而不是频繁使用 “um” 或中文式逐词翻译;
Although I was nervous at first, repeated practice made the process more manageable.
|---|---|---|
| I developed this skill gradually. | It was something I built up through repeated practice. |
| I struggled with ... at first. | I initially found it challenging to ... |
| Instead of memorising every sentence, I focused on key points. | I shifted from word-for-word memorisation to idea-based preparation. |
| This made the process more manageable. | This gave me a clearer and more sustainable way forward. |
| I can confirm that ..., but I cannot conclude that ... | The evidence supports ..., although it does not establish ... |
| It has changed the way I ... | It fundamentally reshaped my approach to ... |
| There is no one-size-fits-all answer. | The most effective approach depends on the learner and the context. |
| The real value lies in ... | What matters most is not ..., but ... |
5. Writing Task 2:
Some people think schools should focus more on teaching practical skills than traditional academic subjects. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
To what extent do you agree or disagree?(在多大程度上同意或不同意)题型。
Useful language
- bridge the gap between theory and real-life application:弥合理论和现实应用之间的差距。
- lay the foundation for further learning:为后续学习打基础。
- come at the expense of ...:以牺牲……
There is an argument that schools should give greater priority to practical skills than to traditional academic subjects. I agree that students need more opportunities to prepare for adult life and employment, but I do not believe this should be achieved by reducing the role of core academic knowledge.
Practical skills can make education more relevant and immediately useful. For example, learning how to communicate clearly, manage a personal budget, use digital tools, or work in a team can help young people become more independent when they enter higher education or the workplace. These activities also bridge the gap between theory and real-life application. A student who completes a assignment for a local organisation, for instance, may learn not only how to plan and present an idea, but also how to respond to feedback and meet a deadline. Such experience can build confidence that is difficult to develop through examinations alone.
However, traditional subjects lay the foundation for further learning and long-term adaptability. Strong reading skills allow people to evaluate information, while mathematics supports logical reasoning and everyday decision-making. In addition, academic knowledge helps students apply a principle in an unfamiliar situation rather than merely follow a fixed procedure. If schools focus too narrowly on skills that are currently popular, those skills may become outdated as technology and labour-market demands change. A solid academic foundation is therefore a form of protection against this uncertainty.
In conclusion, schools should expand practical learning through assignments and real-world tasks, but this should complement rather than replace traditional subjects. The most effective curriculum would combine academic foundations with communication, digital, financial, and problem-solving skills, enabling students to understand ideas and use them responsibly.
- 回应题目: 开头明确 “I agree ... but I do not believe ...”,避免立场模糊。
For example, However, In addition, Therefore, In conclusion,但不要每句都加连接词。
6. Listening maintenance:
True / False / Not Given:
- The speaker believes specialised knowledge is no longer necessary for graduates.
- Work placements can help students understand professional expectations.
- The university requires every student to complete an internship.
False;2. True;3. Not Given。
7. Reading maintenance:
- Skimming
- Matching information
8. Pronunciation、shadowing
Although I was nervous at first / repeated practice made the process more manageable.
9. Common errors
|---|---|---|
| skill 后面乱用介词 | I learned this skill from repeated practices. | I developed this skill through repeated practice. |
| 把“在工作中”直译为 in my work | It is useful in my work to solve problems. | It is useful in my day-to-day work when I need to solve problems. |
| practical 的比较对象不清 | Practical skills are more important. | Practical skills are important, but they should complement core academic knowledge. |
It helps students get jobs. | It improves employability because students can demonstrate communication and teamwork in real situations. |
It changed my way and I become confident. | It changed my approach and made me more confident. |
| 过度使用 very | very useful, very important, very difficult | immediately useful, highly important, particularly challenging |
- 是否能把 very + adjective 换成更具体的表达;
- 是否所有过去经历都正确使用过去时;
- 是否每个段落都有清楚的主语和动词;
10. Review
11. Next-day preparation
- 一个“对你有影响的人”故事,包含人物、相识背景、一个具体事件和长期影响;
- 一个 Task 2 观点:工作经验是否应该成为大学录取的重要因素;
- 从今天作文中选 5 个表达,尝试不用原句而改写成自己的版本;
