2. Speaking focus: a useful skill you learned
IELTS Speaking Part 2 prompt
Describe a useful skill you learned outside school.
You should say:
- what the skill is;
- when and how you learned it;
- why you decided to learn it;
- and explain how it has helped you.
1-minute preparation map
skill → trigger → learning process → difficulty → current benefit
推荐主题:explaining complex problems in plain English。
Working-professional model answer
One useful skill I learned outside school is explaining complex problems in plain English. I gradually developed it through my work, because I often need to communicate with people who have different complex backgrounds.
At first, I tended to use too many abbreviations and describe every detail in the order I discovered it. That made my explanations accurate but difficult to follow. To improve, I started using a simple structure: I would state the problem first, describe the evidence, explain the likely impact, and then suggest the next action. I also practised summarising complicated results in two or three sentences before discussing the details.
The process was not effortless. Sometimes I knew exactly what had happened but could not find a clear way to express it in English. I recorded short explanations, listened to them later, and replaced long or vague sentences with more direct ones. Gradually, I became more confident in meetings and written updates.
This skill has helped me in several ways. It saves time, reduces misunderstandings, and makes it easier for colleagues to decide what to do next. More importantly, it has taught me that effective communication is not about showing how much I know; it is about making the information usable for other people.
Why this approximates Band 7.5–8.0: 有清晰的时间线和因果关系;例子具体;词汇如 abbreviations, evidence, likely impact, misunderstandings 使用自然;复杂句和短句有节奏变化。录音时仍需保证发音和语法稳定。
Student model answer
One useful skill I learned outside school is cooking simple healthy meals. I started learning it when I was living away from my family and realised that eating takeout every day was expensive and unhealthy.
At the beginning, I could only prepare very basic dishes, such as fried rice and vegetable soup. I watched short videos, followed the ingredients carefully, and practised at weekends. My biggest problem was controlling the heat, so I sometimes burnt the food or made it too salty. Instead of giving up, I wrote down what went wrong and tried the same dish again.
After a few months, I could cook several meals without checking a recipe. This skill has helped me save money and take better care of my health. It also gives me a sense of achievement because I can turn a few simple ingredients into a complete meal. I think it is useful not only in daily life but also when I need to live independently.
Part 3 follow-up questions
- Why do some people stop learning a skill after they become adults?
- Is it better to learn practical skills from a teacher or online?
- What skills will be most valuable in the workplace in the future?
- Should schools teach more life skills?
Answer formula:
direct answer → reason → example/contrast → implication
Although..., I would argue that...
。

4. Writing Task 2
Task
Some people think that employers should focus on the practical skills of job applicants rather than their academic qualifications. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
5-minute structure
Useful language
Although practical competence should carry considerable weight, academic qualifications should not be dismissed entirely.
This is largely because practical tasks reveal whether candidates can apply knowledge under real constraints.
For instance, a candidate may have excellent theoretical knowledge but struggle to communicate with clients or resolve an unexpected problem.
That said, qualifications remain indispensable in professions where safety and specialised knowledge are involved.
A balanced recruitment process is therefore more reliable than a single criterion.
Complete model response
It is often argued that employers should prioritise applicants’ practical skills instead of their academic qualifications. I agree that the ability to perform real tasks deserves considerable weight, but I do not believe that formal education should be disregarded completely.
Practical competence is valuable because it shows whether a candidate can apply knowledge under real-world constraints. A person may understand a concept in theory but still be unable to communicate with customers, manage competing priorities, or solve an unexpected problem. For example, when recruiting a assignment coordinator, an employer may learn more from a candidate’s experience of organising a complex assignment than from a list of examination results. Practical experience can also reveal qualities that are difficult to measure in a classroom, such as resilience, teamwork and judgement.
However, academic qualifications continue to serve an important purpose. They provide evidence that an applicant has acquired a foundation of relevant knowledge and has sustained effort over a period of time. This is particularly important in fields such as medicine, colleaguesing and law, where a lack of theoretical understanding can create serious risks. In addition, completing a demanding course may demonstrate that a person can analyse information systematically and learn unfamiliar material, abilities that remain useful even when technology changes the nature of a job.
In my view, the most effective approach is to combine both criteria. Employers should set appropriate academic requirements for specialised positions, then use interviews, work samples or probationary tasks to assess how applicants apply what they know. The relative importance of each criterion can vary according to the role, but neither practical skills nor qualifications should be treated as sufficient on its own.
In conclusion, practical ability is a strong indicator of workplace performance, yet academic study supplies knowledge and intellectual foundations that many jobs require. A balanced recruitment process is therefore more reliable than choosing one criterion exclusively.
5. Listening maintenance
Answer strategy: 先预测答案词性和可能的同义表达;听到 but, actually, rather than, what matters is 时提高警惕,因为答案可能在转折后出现。
Original micro-practice:
The first proposal was attractive because it was inexpensive. However, after the team considered maintenance costs, the second option appeared more sustainable. It required a larger initial investment, but it was expected to reduce operating expenses over the following three years.
Question: Why was the second option preferred? Answer: It was expected to reduce operating costs in the long term. 关键词替换: maintenance costs / operating expenses , more sustainable / long-term 。
6. Reading maintenance
Answer strategy:
7. Pronunciation and shadowing
10-minute practice
At first / I tended to use too many abbreviations / and describe every detail... - 练习句子重音: effective communication is not about showing how much I know ; it is about making information usable .
- 重录 Part 2,要求减少 um, so, you know,但保留自然停顿。
abbreviation/əˌbriːviˈeɪʃən/:重音在-a-;evidence/ˈevɪdəns/:首音节重读;misunderstanding/ˌmɪsʌndəˈstændɪŋ/:不要漏掉中间的 /d/ 音。
8. Common errors and corrections
| Common error | Correction | Note |
|---|---|---|
| explain me the problem | explain the problem to me | explain
| discuss about the issue | discuss the issue | discuss 本身不需要 about |
| practical skills are more important than qualification | practical skills are more important than qualifications | 泛指复数通常用复数形式 |
| people can learn it in internet | people can learn it on the internet | 固定搭配是 on the internet |
| it can make people to improve | it can help people improve | help + object + bare infinitive |
| I very agree with this view | I strongly agree with this view | very 不能直接修饰 agree |
9. Review checklist
- [ ] Speaking Part 2
